Matka is the name of the fabric made from silk threads of cocoons from which the silk moth has crawled. In the silk industry, cocoons containing the silkworms are boiled to keep the cocoon whole. Cocoons that have been gnawed to pieces by unpopped butterflies are not usable for industry. They are a 'waste product'. Hand spinners and hand weavers turn this into a beautiful fabric: Matka silk.
